ABOUT US
Since its inception in 1892, as the Southern Medical Association, the organization was established to address specific concerns of local African American physicians and their patients. In 1904, the organization was restructured as the South Atlantic Medical Association (SAMA) and its membership was expanded to include other medical professionals. Currently, the organization is a diverse group of African American medical providers including physicians, dentists, pharmacists, podiatrists and chiropractors whose goal is to improve the advancement of medical science to benefit underrepresented minorities in Savannah and surrounding counties. SAMA is a community of providers who share in similar experiences, interests and concerns and its members lend collegial support for one another in hopes of increasing the recruitment and retention of African American doctors.
